An In-Depth Conversation with André noon, Game Director at Don’t Nod

Archyde caught up with andré noon, the brilliant mind behind Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, to discuss the latest gem from Don’t Nod, the studio known for narrative-driven experiences like Life is Strange and Tell Me Why.

Welcome, André. Let’s dive right in. What inspired Lost Records: Bloom & Rage?

Thanks, I’m excited to talk about it. We’ve always been inspired by music and the ’90s culture. The idea of a small town, a punk band, and a mystery to unravel was something we knew we wanted to explore. We also wanted to create a game that feels like a mixtape of memories, weaving together different time periods.

Tell us about Velvet Cove and its significance to the story?

Velvet Cove is more than just a setting; it’s a character in itself. It’s a quaint, peaceful town on the surface, but it hides a deeper, more complex history. Just like our protagonist, Swann, who struggles with her past, the town too has its secrets.Players will uncover these secrets alongside Swann, making their journey more engaging and meaningful.

The game is split into two parts, Tape 1 “Bloom” and Tape 2 “Rage”.Can you share more about this structure?

Absolutely. We wanted to create a narrative experience that evolves over time, just like a good album or mixtape. Tape 1 “Bloom” sets the stage, introducing players to Velvet Cove, its inhabitants, and the initial mystery. It’s a gentle introduction that allows players to ease into the game’s world and mechanics. Tape 2 “Rage”, coming later this year, will delve deeper into the story, adding another layer of complexity and tying up loose ends.

Lost Records boasts 30 achievements. How do they enhance the player’s experience?

Achievements are a fun way to encourage exploration and engagement with our game world. They’re not just rewards for completing tasks; they’re pieces of a puzzle that tell a story in themselves. Some achievements might seem trivial, like naming your cat, but they’re all connected to the game’s narrative or deeper secrets. We hope they’ll provide a sense of accomplishment and reward players for delving deep into Velvet Cove.

What challenges did you face while developing this game, and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge was balancing the narrative complexity with the gameplay mechanics. We wanted to create a game that feels like a dream, with a surreal, nostalgic atmosphere, while ensuring the gameplay is engaging and intuitive. It took a lot of iterations and playtesting, but I believe we’ve struck a good balance.

Lastly, for our readers planning to explore velvet Cove, what advice would you give them?

Take your time to explore every nook and cranny.Velvet Cove hides secrets in the most unexpected places. Also, pay attention to the conversations. The characters have a lot to say, and their experiences might just hold the key to unraveling the mystery.

Thank you, André, for giving us an insight into lost Records: Bloom & Rage. We’re eager to dive into Velvet Cove and unravel its mysteries.
