A pedestrian and cycle bridge, 710 meters long, overlooking Boulevard Léopold III, on the border between the Flemish and Brussels Regions, has now been installed. Accessible to light users from April 2024, the imposing structure connects the Harenweg in Zaventem with the Sint-Stevens-Woluwestraat in Machelen, offering pedestrians and cyclists a safer alternative for crossing the important artery. This is the longest bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Flanders, say the regional authorities.

Construction began at the end of 2022. Some finishing work remains to be carried out on the surface as well as the development of connections with the existing cycle paths. The bridge will be almost eight meters wide. Once operational, it will allow users to avoid having to make a detour of approximately one kilometer, via avenues du Bourget and de la Fusée, to cross the boulevard.

The work also covers the existing tram line. Stairs provide access to the tram stops. The new bridge links the future Brussels ring cycle path and the F201 cycle route, also under construction, which will connect the airport to the center of Brussels.

The Flemish government is investing 11.7 million euros in this project.
