In a vibrant city known for its diverse cultural landscape, a new wave of comedy is taking center stage: chinese stand-up. Across Los Angeles, Cantonese and Mandarin jokes are echoing in comedy clubs, restaurants, and even online platforms, proving that laughter knows no linguistic barriers.
Spearheading this movement is Re-educated Comedy, a series of shows and open mics founded by Lewis Liu in late 2023. Liu, inspired by the growing demand for a space for Chinese-speaking comedians, recognized a gap in the L.A. comedy scene. “A couple of my clients, who are film and television professionals and social media influencers, expressed a desire to do comedy in Chinese, but lamented the lack of opportunities in L.A.,” he explained.
Liu’s solution? A mixer and a stand-up show in downtown L.A. The event was a resounding success, attracting a large crowd eager for a taste of this fresh and unique comedic experience. “Because we had food, people showed up for that,” Liu chuckled. “Some people probably showed up for the comedians.”
The Power of Open Mic Nights
Building on this momentum, Re-educated Comedy hosted its first ticketed stand-up show exclusively in Chinese in March 2024. The 140-seat comedy club sold out, demonstrating the strong appetite for this emerging art form. Recognizing a need for more material development, Liu introduced free open mics to the programming. “Having a small live audience really helps them test out the material,” he emphasized.
“After our first show, our comedians were telling me, ‘Lewis, it’s great that we have a show, but we’re running out of material,'” Liu said.
Re-educated Comedy is dedicated to creating an inclusive and welcoming space for comedians of all backgrounds. The name itself is a playful double entendre, referencing both the act of cultural assimilation and the inherent humor that arises from new experiences. “When you come to a new country, you learn about the new things in the new world,” Liu, who immigrated from central China over a decade ago, explained. “you essentially get reeducated.” He added, “we let the audience interpret how they see it.”
As Chinese stand-up comedy continues to gain traction in Los Angeles, one thing is clear: laughter truly is a global language. The growing popularity of Re-educated Comedy showcases the city’s vibrant cultural diversity and its embrace of new and exciting forms of entertainment.
