A company creates a 3D prosthesis for a dog using the LiDAR sensor of the iPhone

Attention, instant emotion (and marketing): the youtuber Marques Brownlee, Apple and the company 3DPets recently released a video detailing the process of creating a 3D-printed prosthesis for a three-legged dog.

The creation of animal prostheses is nothing new, but what impresses here is the technology used by 3DPets. Indeed, the company is able to model the prosthesis using an iPhone 14 Pro and an iPad Pro, two devices equipped with a LiDAR sensor. Behind this acronym, which stands for “light detection and ranging“in English or”light detection and distance estimation“in French, hides a technology that makes it possible to measure distances by projecting beams of light invisible to the naked eye.

As can be seen in the video below, published by the youtuber, the scan of the dog Cleo is rather fast and efficient, which makes it possible to model the prosthesis just as quickly in the second phase of the process. It is then up to the animal to get used to its new prosthesis.
