Officials said Wednesday that coronavirus infections continue to rise in Shanghai despite widespread closures.
And 26,330 new infections were recorded on Tuesday, the authorities said Wednesday, but most of the cases are asymptomatic.
Shanghai is at the center of the largest outbreak of Covid-19 in China since the pandemic began more than two years ago, and most of the nearly 28,000 cases have been recorded across the country.
Despite the announcement on Monday of an expected gradual easing of the lockdown, the vast majority of the Shanghai region’s 26 million residents are still affected by the curfew.
The city government also banned private traffic on the streets, but residents were allowed to leave their homes on Wednesday.
However, most stores remain closed.
