As a spectacle that promises chills, Talk to Me is a bit of a disappointment. The scary atmosphere failed to build and there were many plot holes in the story. (Photo: Twitter)

Talk to Me promises a gripping horror spectacle that will make your legs goosebumps. This film is set in Australia, which of course has a different atmosphere from foreign horror films made in Hollywood. Since trailerit was released a few months ago, hype– is really amazing.

The film centers on a sacred hand that can cause people to be possessed. Those with brave souls are challenged to hold the hand and say “talk to me” or “talk to me” then followed by “I let you in” or “I let you in”. After that, the holder of the hand will be possessed by a spirit.

The concept is indeed interesting. It’s like playing jailangkung or Ouija with different levels. In jailangkung or Ouija, inanimate objects are possessed. However, in Talk to Me, it is the human who is possessed by the spirit.

Even though it looks scary, this film is not scary at all. Possession is not a terrible model like Indonesian or Hollywood horror films. In fact, locally made films are more scary for a theme like this.

Meanwhile, this film also raises the issue of extreme grief and loss. In this film, the main character, Mia, lost her mother two years ago due to suicide. But, until the events in the film, Mia has not let her mother go. So, when the ghost comes, Mia is easily swayed.

Mia’s obsession with her mother’s ghost proves dangerous. The activity of talking with hands, which was originally just a game of uptight young people, finally ended in tragedy. Mia ruined everything she had because of that game and also her inability to let her mother go.

This film is actually right in describing how grief will destroy someone if it is not handled properly. Sophie Wilde perfectly describes how disturbed Mia is by her obsession. But, yeah that’s about it.

The spirits shown in this film are less scary and the horror atmosphere is lacking. There is jump scare, but not that spectacular. This film doesn’t give goosebumps even though it’s built like that.

For 95 minutes, the audience will be treated to a spectacle of a rather slow story development. At the start, the film quickly provides a spectacle plot twist which is a bit surprising. But, after that, a lot plot hole and the explanation regarding the hand is also less satisfactory.

In fact, the climax was less intense. The director duo, Danny and Michael Philippou, intend to give something spectacular at the end of the film. Unfortunately, it’s even less attractive because the packaging feels “meh”. Viewers who have watched similar broadcasts often can already guess what happened.

Conceptually, this film is indeed interesting by providing an alternative viewing of possession. That nowadays, young people think that such a phenomenon is a game that can go viral. They don’t care about the consequences at all and not everyone sees it as a game.

This film also relies on gore which is not too total made. So, there is an impression, this film is a bit halfway between wanting to give a spectacle that makes goosebumps and gore bloody. Department makeupits not bad. But, the spooky atmosphere was not felt at all.

As a spectacle that promises to thrill, Talk to Me rather disappointing. The scary atmosphere failed to build and there were many plot holes in the story. The prequel will probably answer all plot hole the. Apart from Sophie Wilde’s okay appearance, the other players appeared mediocre.

Talk to Me begins showing in theaters throughout Indonesia today, Wednesday (23/8). This film is rated 17 years and over because of its vulgar, violent language and bloody cruel scenes. Have a good time watching!
