A hard blow for David Goffin, the day after his quarter-final loss at Wimbledon!

As if the pain of failure were not enough, David Goffin will not even be able to have the satisfaction of seeing his ranking of 58th player in the world evolve upwards after what will remain, with the hindsight of the next few days, a beautiful journey until in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam. Well, this great performance does not earn any ATP points! This is the consequence of the decision taken by the ATP, precisely (and which however was not unanimous among the players), following the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian players decreed by the organizers of Wimbledon in the context of the war in Ukraine. Normally, a Grand Slam quarter-final earns a nice total of 360 ATP points. Here, it will be nothing, nada! “It’s almost funny, but it’s not really,” he commented. “But hey, the important thing is that tennis is here again and I have to stay positive. “Goffin could however have celebrated his return to the Top 40 (“It would have done me good”) …

The situation is even worse, and a little grotesque for some players who, like the Belgian nº1, will plummet in the standings. Thus, this Monday, the Liègeois will find himself at best 71st in the world (-13 places)! He does not in fact win a point, but above all loses half of those in his quarter-final, in 2019 at Wimbledon, which had been “frozen” because of the Covid. That is 180 points.

Novak Djokovic also already knows that he will fall back to 7th in the world (his worst ranking in almost four years) even if he wins a 7th coronation on Sunday! For Goffin, the good news is that he only has… 25 points to defend for the rest of the year. And so, the comeback can begin with the American tour (Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati and the US Open).
