Already famous for having the highest volcano in the entire Solar System, Mars would now have one more volcanic monster. Located between Noctis Labyrinthus and Valles Marineris, this new volcano, 450 kilometers in diameter and more than 9 kilometers high, has nevertheless gone unnoticed during more than 50 years of exploration of the surface of the Red Planet.

When we talk regarding volcanoes on Mars, we immediately think of Olympus Mons or Mount Olympus. This gigantic building, more than 22 kilometers high and 648 kilometers in diameter (it would cover almost all of France!), is in fact a real monster whose imposing silhouette undeniably marks the surface of the Red Planet. But it’s not the only giant volcano on Mars. Three other titans are clearly visible: Ascraeus Mons, Peacock Mountain et Arsia Mons. In single file, they form the so-called alignment of Tharsis Mountainslocated southeast of their big brother and close to Labyrinth of the nightthe Labyrinth of the Night.
