A video sparked wild speculation on the internet. It shows a bear standing bolt upright on two legs in its zoo enclosure. Many Internet users have no doubt: This is not a real bear, but a person in a bear costume. Local media also began to have doubts. “Because of their attitude, some people on the Internet are questioning whether the bears are ‘people in disguise,'” wrote the Hangzhou Daily.
The excitement was so great that the Chinese zoo held a press conference on Monday to put an end to the allegations. The sun bears from Malaysia, also known as sun bears, are smaller than other bears and look different, but are real, the zoo clarified. Sun bears stand a maximum of 1.3 meters on their hind legs, while grizzlies and other species are up to 2.8 meters tall, it said.
The city of Hangzhou has since commented on the rumours. “People wondered if it was a real bear or just someone in disguise, but it’s true!” the city said on Twitter.
