A revelation that had the effect of a bomb in the British royal family! This Friday, the “Mirror” revealed a handwritten letter written in June 1919 which would prove that the father of Elizabeth II, King George VI, had an affair with a married woman for several years.
The letter was written by Edward VIII, George’s older brother, and was addressed to his then lover, Freda Dudley Ward. A letter which therefore reveals the identity of the mysterious woman with whom the father of Elizabeth II had a relationship: an Australian named Lady Sheila Loughborough.
How Edward VIII helped his brother maintain his affair
In this rather detailed letter, Edward VIII, former king of England, recounts how he helped his brother to deceive his partner, explaining how he managed to keep Lady Sheila Loughborough’s husband away so that his brother could be left alone with she.
It was 1919, and when the Loughborough couple had invited the two royal brothers to their home, Edward VIII did everything to convince Lord Loughborough to accompany him to go golf. The purpose of the scheme was to leave his brother alone with Lady Loughborough. “After tea I managed to lure Loughie (ndlr, Lord Loughborough) on the pretext that he wanted to play a few more holes of golf on the course, in order to give Sheilie a chance to be alone with Bertie (note, nickname given to George VI by his brother). They said they were tired and we left them... “, thus explains the uncle of Elizabeth II in the letter.
The letter put up for auction
According to newspaper information, George VI was in his twenties at the time the letter was written. It was during a ball in 1918 that he met Lady Loughborough. Their affair would have lasted 2 years, until 1920.
Edward VIII’s letter went on sale at Forum Auctions, a London auction house, with a starting price of £2,500 or €3,000. The auction will take place on February 10.
