In order to fight against medical deserts, a community of communes in Drôme has hired five doctors. This decision is a relief for the 50,000 inhabitants.

Dr. Marine Balaizeau took office last January. She does not practice as a liberal, she chose to be an employee. She was hired by a community of communes in Drôme as a general practitioner. Every day she receives new patients. A fixed salary and a regular schedule prompted her to apply. “It is the choice of simplicity, to have employee schedules. When we are at work, we are at work. When we’re home, we’re home“, says Dr. Marine Balaizeau.

Like her, five general practitioners have been recruited in this health center. Attracting new doctors by paying them is the choice of elected officials. The community of communes has 50,000 inhabitants, 10% of whom do not have attending physicians. Since its opening in 2021, the health center already has 2,000 patients. This is a major investment for the community of municipalities: 2 million euros for the building. The structure is in deficit to the tune of 200,000 euros this year. However, this choice is assumed by the elected officials.
