A new function is coming to Messenger

Meta announces new shortcuts for its Messenger application.

Facebook updated shortcuts in the Messenger app. At the moment, some seem to be exclusive to iOS at the moment.

Note that the first two new features described in this article are available for all Messenger users, on iOS and Android.

A “do not disturb” shortcut

The new /silent shortcut will allow the user to send a message without notification. A way to contact your interlocutor without disturbing him if he is busy, for example. Other shortcuts will send money on Messenger.

“Sending a message with /silent removes the anxiety of interrupting someone with a non-urgent pop-up notification or disturbing them during their off hours”, presents the platform. Note that this feature is also available on Instagram under the name “@silent”.

Tag an entire group of users

According to an announcement from Meta, shortcuts will make it easier for Messenger users to use certain features. For example, the new tag @everyone alerts all participants in a group chat at the same time. To understand this new option, you should know that previously users could only “@” (tag) specific people.

“@everyone is great for group callbacks, impromptu meetings, or when you need to get the expert panel together to find an answer to a pressing question. This way your message gets maximum exposure and no one is left out”says Meta.

In short, this change is to make it easier to send a message to everyone at once. It’s comparable to the @everyone feature that Discord has already rolled out.

Future novelties

In the future, other shortcuts, such as /gif, will make it easier for users to find GIFs in their chat. The /Pay shortcut will send and receive money via a Messenger conversation. To take advantage of it, all you have to do is “to type /pay to send or request money securely and free of charge”. It will first appear on iOS and Android in the United States.

Finally, shortcuts /shrug and/tableflip, will offer the possibility of writing the associated kaomojis more quickly. Literally “face marks”, these are smileys invented by the Japanese. Here are two examples: “(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻” and “¯_(ツ)_/¯”. This feature will eventually be available to all Messenger users, on Android and iOS.
