A green tax

Bruno Le Maire reveals a new perspective for the 2024 budget. A tax on highways and major airports. This initiative aims to mobilize 600 million euros each year. For what ? The Minister of Finance explains it simply. It’s about making greater demands on “those who pollute more”. It is thus part of a logic of environmental responsibility, where major transport players actively participate in financing the ecological transition.

The main concern of users often lies in the impact of such taxes on their costs. But Bruno Le Maire reassures them: this tax increase will not result in an increase in toll rates. The tax will mainly be aimed to companies whose turnover and profitability exceed a certain threshold. Companies like Vinci, Sanef and Eiffage, already in the executive’s sights, therefore find themselves on the front line of this new measure.

Budget priorities: Education, Defense and ecology

Behind this tax, the government displays a clear ambition for the 2024 budget: to meet “the three major challenges” which are the country’s debt reduction, the fight against inflation, and above all, investments for a successful ecological transition. The State, with its budgetary decisions, intends to put the ecological transition at the heart of its priorities, in particular by allocating An additional 7 billion euros for this cause.

In addition to this tax, the 2024 budget presents other strong orientations. The public sector will see the arrival of 8,300 additional civil servants. Defense will benefit an increase of 3.3 billion euros in its budget, et National Education with an increase of 3.9 billion euros. Furthermore, France is considering a record borrowing of 285 billion euros on the financial markets in 2024. So many decisions that are shaping the French economic and social landscape for the year to come.
