A poll gives the CD&V as the smallest party in Flanders, its president Joachim Coens withdraws

The Christian Democrats would register a decline of 6.7 points compared to their result in the Flemish regional elections of 2019. Given the margin of error, the CD&V can however exchange places with the Communists and the Greens of Groen.

Following these more than disappointing results, the president of the CD&V Joachim Coens announced his intention to organize early elections, specifying that he himself would not stand for his own succession. The Party Council will vote next Thursday. The mandate of Mr. Coens runs in principle until December but, in the interest of his political party, he considers that it would be appropriate to find him a successor in advance.

Mr. Coens will remain president until this internal election. According to the spokesperson for the bet, the ballot will no doubt be organized after the summer.

In the ranks of the CD&V, the need to find a consensus candidate is regularly mentioned rather than embarking on a disputed election between several candidates.

Vlaams Belang and N-VA neck and neck

According to this poll, the Vlaams Belang remains the largest formation in Flanders, with 22.9%, or 4.5 points more than in the 2019 election. The N-VA follows closely with 22.4%, an estimate still below its 2019 result.
