Employees speak of illegal practices and a culture of “pressure”, which management denies.

This is a document which was published on Saturday October 14, and which was developed by the independent firm Progexa for Amazon’s central CSE (Social and Economic Committee).

While employees talk about illegal practices and culture of “pression”the document identifies a sharp increase in work accidents, absenteeism “alarming”, un turn-over important.

Amazon: Eight warehouses and headquarters analyzed

What emerges most disturbing is undoubtedly the number of work accidents resulting in lost time. The latter has in fact more than doubled in 2022, which corresponds to 1,132 incidents compared to 482 in 2021.

AFP interviewed employees who preferred to remain anonymous; their first names have been changed. According to them, this increase in incidents is none other than the consequence of “pressures” managerial and “results imperatives”.

A 47-year-old employee, who says she “demoralized”noted :

During the 7.5 hour shift, several managers come, they pass the baton, they don’t let you go.

A “guilt” strategy

Another employee, who works at the Amazon warehouse in Sevrey in Saône-et-Loire suggests that when he injured his arm, management offered him the signing of a “good start” in lieu of the declaration of a accident of work.

A 50 year old woman always says to herself “interlocked” well after a supervisor called her after an accident when she was working night shift to offer to take “recovery hours” instead of a stop.

Another testimony, that of a 56-year-old handler who talks about a strategy of “guilt” : When she blocks her back, “They told me it was my fault”. But according to her, these are unsuitable positions and without machines to help lift packages weighing up to 20 kilos which are at fault.

Absenteeism in question

And the Progexa firm points out absenteeism judged “alarming” (15.9%), to be correlated according to him to the explosion of sick leave (+91%).

An Amazon spokesperson told AFP:

We offer our more than 20,000 employees in France a safe and modern working environment.

And he advances: “An independent survey carried out by Ifop in 2023 reveals that more than 8 out of 10 Amazon employees would recommend their loved ones to come and work there and plan to do so in the coming years.”

Progexa has observed significant turnover, since 90% of employees have less than 5 years of seniority. The turnover rate is 36%. As for departures, those said “natural” are only represented at 3%. Breaking a trial period, dismissal, resignation or signing a contractual termination form the vast majority of reasons linked to departure.
