This test concerns the BTWIN LD 920 E, presented as being the most ambitious of electric bikes from Decathlon as of Reveal Innovation 2022. Does this electric bike keep its promises compared to the competition?

After a wait of several months, the BTWIN LD 920 E arrives on the market. This Decathlon electric bike aims to be innovative, with significant autonomy combined with an automatic transmission. Certainly, its technical characteristics are promising, but is it revolutionary as some claim? Will he manage to stand out from the competition?

LD 920 E test: a choice finish

  • Technical characteristics
  • Prix : 2999 €
  • Cadre : Aluminium
  • Couple : 65 Nm
  • Battery : 702 Wh
  • Wheel : 28″
  • Brakes : hydraulic disc
  • Weight : 26 kg

Available in a lowered version, the model in our test is offered in 3 different sizes. It benefits from a wide range of equipment. In addition to its color screen, it is equipped with a luggage rack, a kickstand and a mudguard. At first glance, the Long Distance 920 E has all the characteristics of a city bike. Here, he renounces sporty and aggressive lines, he is content to maintain a sober style, but always pleasant to the eye. Only one downside: the frame has some unsightly weld folds in several places.

On the other hand, driving comfort immediately raises the bar. From the very first pedals, the LD 920 E provides real pleasure. The more kilometers we cover, the greater the feeling of well-being. To justify this pleasing observation, it is important to recall the mode of operation of the bicycle.

LD 920 E test: XXl autonomy

Let’s continue with what distinguishes the LD 920 E from the electric city bike range. As its name suggests, this VAE is made for long distances. It integrates a battery with a capacity of 702 Wh. According to Decathlon, its autonomy varies from 80 to 150 km.

Note that this autonomy depends on the choice of driving mode engaged. During our test, in Turbo mode, the LD 920 E covered 80 km versus 150 km for Eco mode. Furthermore, it can cover a distance of 100 km by alternating between the two modes (Turbo and Normal). In any case, we can say that the company has kept its promises in terms of autonomy.

However, to compare the performance of this “star” Decathlon electric bike to other models, we must also look at the power of the motor and its transmission. In addition, other criteria such as driving experience play a determining role.

LD 920 E test: continuously variable motor

To propel its cycle, Decathlon uses a E2 Drives motor, manufactured by a young Belgian company. This engine incorporates a continuously variable automatic transmission, reminiscent of the CVT system used for cars. It thus optimizes the cadence of pedal strokes according to several parameters: speed, torque, elevation.

Furthermore, he has a high torque of 65 Nm, allowing comfortable use in urban environments. Decathlon’s strength lies in the fact that all the constituent elements and equipment of this VAE are perfectly calibrated. Thus, when starting, the torque sensor immediately transmits assistance proportional to the pedaling forces to the bicycle.

And as your cadence increases, this Ebike adapts the speed by precisely adjusting the pedal level, all while being assisted by the CVT transmission. Flat or on terrain, at low or high speed, the LD 920 E engine provided appropriate reactions during our test. Even in very demanding areas, this engine adapted to the cyclist’s pedal stroke.

Rather modest comfort

In terms of comfort, the LD 920 E counts on a 30mm suspension fork travel from HeadShok. This absorbs road irregularities. Its design aims to provide a perfect balance between comfort, ease of maintenance and performance.

In addition, its saddle made of polyurethane foam (memory foam) ensures a certain comfort even after tens of minutes of riding. Even more, this bike relies on 28-inch tires to resist punctures. To this end, Decathlon has incorporated a nylon band with a thickness of 3 mm.

As for safety, the bike benefits from a disc brake systeme. Tektro brand, the latter is also effective and biting. During our test of the LD 920 E, there is little to criticize, apart from the fact that this Ebike does not have ABS.

LD 920 E test: Protection against theft

Before concluding this presentation, let’s move on to the “connectivity” part. Indeed, in the middle of the handlebars, we find a screen offering an overview of the current speed, the remaining autonomy and the distance accomplished. All this information is presented with great fluidity. Compared to competing models, this screen shows the time constantly. Furthermore, this model is distinguished by its ability to track movements using GPS via a specific tracer, identical to that of the 920 Connect.

Decathlon’s Mobility app was designed to allow cyclists to locate their bike if it has been stolen.

Verdict

With the LD 920 E, Decathlon is following a certain number of prestigious brands whose performance no longer needs to be verified.

In fact, this newcomer has no shortage of advantages. Starting with its CVT transmission, its speed settings, its torque sensor and even its promised range. These characteristics make it a very promising machine. However, its finish, weight and comfort need to be reviewed. Is this, however, an obstacle? Not at all particularly for a value of 2999 euros.

A nice sum, indeed, but much lower than the prices charged by other renowned brands for such a device. In short, this is where the revolution lies, which has always been the particularity of Decathlon.
