Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko has set a world record for the longest time spent in space.
According to the report of the foreign news agency, Oleg Kononenko has set the world record for spending the most time in space for 878 days or about two and a half years.
According to the Russian Space Corporation, the Russian cosmonaut broke the record of his fellow Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka on January 4 at 8:30 PM local time.
Gennady Padalka spent 878 days, 11 hours, 29 minutes and 48 seconds in space in 2017. 59-year-old Kononenko claimed this record during his 5th flight from Earth to space.
In an interview from the International Space Station (ISS), he said, ‘I am proud of all my achievements, but I am most proud that the record for the total duration of a human stay in space is now held by a Russian cosmonaut. Passed’.
Oleg Kononenko is currently in space, his journey will end in September 2024, by which time he will have spent 1,110 days in space.
According to the European Space Agency, he began his space career as an engineer and began training as an astronaut at the age of 34 when he joined the group selected for the ISS program. He made his first space flight in April 2008 and spent 200 days in space.
