The 5th grade student felt unwell then had a “heavy fall”, fifteen minutes after receiving an injection of vaccine against the papillomavirus. He died Friday from head trauma. The ARS evokes “stress caused by vaccination”, and rules out any link with the serum itself.

An administrative investigation was opened after the death of a schoolboy in Loire-Atlantique. He felt unwell followed by a fall when he had just been vaccinated against the papillomavirus, the Pays de la Loire Regional Health Agency (ARS) announced this Monday, October 30. The agency rules out any link between the vaccine and the illness.

On October 19, the teenager, a 5th grade student at Saint-Dominique college in Saint-Herblain near Nantes (Loire-Atlantique), had a “heavy fall” which caused a head trauma, following an illness that occurred 15 minutes after vaccination, specifies the ARS in a press release.

“This type of discomfort can occur due to the stress caused by vaccination but is unrelated to the vaccine product or to a quality defect in the vaccine,” insists the ARS.

Temporary suspension of the vaccination campaign in Loire-Atlantique

The student was hospitalized at the Nantes University Hospital after his fall but his condition deteriorated in the days that followed and he “died on October 27,” the press release specifies.

“As with any serious adverse event linked to care”, an administrative investigation was commissioned by the director general of the ARS “to establish the conditions for carrying out vaccination and its medical surveillance in the establishment, as well as the conditions of the medical care of the child”, indicates the agency.

Following this fall, the vaccination campaign was suspended in Loire-Atlantique on Friday October 20, the eve of the school holidays. It will resume at the start of the school year on November 6, we learned from the ARS.

The campaign to vaccinate middle school students in 5th grade against papillomaviruses, the cause of many cancers such as cervical cancer, was launched at the beginning of October in France.
