An increase in world prices for robusta, recorded against the backdrop of information about a decrease in the production of this type of coffee, can lead to a significant increase in the price of espresso made from it, says Freedom Finance Global analyst Vladimir Chernov, whose commentary was reviewed by Lenta.ru.
According to the expert, robusta futures will rise in price until May, and in April this will lead to an increase in espresso prices by 10 percent. It is noted that the drop in production volumes in Vietnam, which is a leading exporter of these raw materials, was not unexpected. Back in November last year, the National Coffee Association predicted a 10 percent reduction in the harvest due to dry weather, but, as it turned out, in reality we are talking about a decrease in its volume by 20 percent.
The situation in the markets is complicated by the fact that local farmers fear a lack of water for irrigation and are switching en masse from growing coffee to alternative crops such as durian, avocado and passion fruit.
Earlier it became known that due to a record rise in the price of cocoa beans, also largely due to record low rainfall and heat in a number of African countries, dark chocolate, which contains more than two-thirds of this raw material, could rise in price by 70–80 percent.
