A special exhibition prepared by grandmothers in their 80s in Chilgok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do and a genius fairy tale writer in their teens in Jeju gives a calming impression.
It is a special exhibition to convey warm comfort and love beyond generations.
According to Chilgok-gun on the 19th, the ‘Jeon Yi-soo Chilgok Grandma Font Special Exhibition’ will be held at the ‘Walking Wolves’ Gallery in Jocheon-eup, Jeju-si until the 16th of next month under the theme of ‘It’s okay’.
Over the course of a month, a canvas explaining about 40 works by former artists in Chilgok Grandma font will be hung side by side, and a collection of poems and 10 poems containing the lives and pets of Chilgok grandmothers will be displayed.
The Chilgok Grandma Font is a font (five types) created after numerous practices by five Chilgok grandmothers who had mastered Hangeul in their 70s due to poverty and the Japanese colonial period.
It was so popular that it was used on a New Year’s card sent by President Yoon Seok-yeol.
The 15-year-old Jeon was introduced as the youngest children’s story writer on a television program in 2018 and has published 11 children’s books and essays.
About 100 people attended the opening ceremony, including Jeju Governor Oh Yeong-hoon, Chilgok County Governor Kim Jae-wook, Chilgok Grandma Font characters Lee Won-soon and Kim Young-bun, and former writers.
When the opening ceremony was broadcast live through SNS, the number of views was high enough to record 10,000.
The grandmothers of Chilgok shared affection for the former writer, who would be their grandchildren, by feeding them vegetables they had grown themselves.
Artist Jeon, along with his younger brother Woo Tae-gun, comforted Chilgok grandmother, who had lived a tumultuous life, by painting Chilgok grandmother’s younger days and present appearance on a large canvas.
Author Jeon said, “It is very meaningful to be able to exhibit the Chilgok Grandma Font, which contains traces of the deep life of grandmothers, and my paintings together.” ”he said.
Governor Oh Yeong-hoon and county head Kim Jae-wook delivered a message of communication and harmony by carrying out a ceremony to combine water from the Nakdonggang River and seawater from Jeju Island in pottery.
Governor Oh said, “I hope that the special exhibition will be an opportunity for teenagers and 80s to go beyond generations and look at the future of the society we dream of with a warmer gaze. I hope that Chilgok and the citizens of Jeju will continue to have a special relationship that will make them happier.”
Gunsu Kim said, “I think the reason why the paintings and writing works are intense yet natural is because they resemble the harmonious and clean nature of Jeju. We will develop cultural contents such as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s legal cultural city selection and the Chilgok Grandma font as another growth engine.”
Cheol-woo Lee, governor of North Gyeongsang Province, Hee-yong Jeong, member of the National Assembly, Hong-shik Choi, CEO of King Sejong the Great Commemorative Association, and many entertainers, including Park Seo-jin, the god of Django, supported the special exhibition by sending congratulatory messages.
