1,2,3,4. Action. At the beginning of August, DJI launched the fourth generation of its Osmo Action, a small camera perfect for sports in the Chinese brand’s catalog. A product that logically stands as a competitor to the famous GoPro. With its experience, DJI has arguments to put forward in this competition for small sports cameras.
Because this is not the manufacturer’s first attempt. We can now even say that the Osmo Action is reaching maturity since the differences between Action 3 and Action 4 are not numerous. Much appreciated improvements, yes. A revolution, no.
A pocket size
What is ultimately interesting with this Osmo Action 4 is its compact format for the rendering it can offer. With its dimensions of 70.5 x 44.2 x 32.8 mm and a weight of no more than 150 grams (145 to be precise even if you have to add one or two with the protection bundle), the camera is easily transportable. Even with its accessories.
In any case, that’s what we appreciated. Action 4 fits in a pocket. The additional batteries (we are talking here about the “adventure combo” pack that we tested, editor’s note) find their place in a not too large case which also serves as a charger. Finally, it is the extension bar that takes up the most space but will easily fit in a backpack.
No frills
In addition to this compact format, the Osmo Action 4 is not cluttered with unnecessary items. Two buttons – one for powering on and one for triggering actions – and two compartments – one for inserting the battery and the memory card and one for accessing a USB-C port. Two touch screens, one on the front and the other on the back, complete the camera. Simple and efficient.

Everything is accessible and easy to use. Well, with the exception of the protective shell, which is not always easy to attach or disassemble. It nevertheless offers the advantage of offering better protection (we would also have preferred complete protection because a sharp object could still do damage) but above all two magnetic attachments to use it with the extension bar: to film in landscape mode… but also in portrait mode. Well thought out and useful to share on social networks.
This sharing on social networks is facilitated by the quick connection between the Osmo Action 4 and our smartphone using the “DJI Mimo” application. We can thus easily recover the content captured with the small sports camera.

But let’s get to the heart of the action. How good is the Osmo Action 4 camera? The 10 Mpx sensor allows you to film 4K videos at up to 120 fps in 16:9 format. If the technical sheet is not the best available, the result is there. Even for the sound part since the device has three microphones. On the photo side, we can also only be satisfied with the quality of the images captured. Note that we tested the Action 4 in vlogging conditions which already highlight the quality of DJI’s work on image stabilization. You must therefore still take a little time to find the configuration that satisfies you (especially in terms of angle and “intensity” – four modes are available – of stabilization for more extreme sports).

In terms of autonomy, however, there is disappointment… because of DJI’s promises. Because with a maximum of 90 minutes per battery, we have honorable performance but far from the 120 minutes announced by the brand.

Good stabilization, good autonomy, good image quality and compact format, the DJI Osmo Action 4 is a very good sports camera which can offer great use beyond the sporting aspect. We loved going on trips with this pocket camera that goes everywhere. A discreet and lightweight vlogging solution.
Finally, DJI is doing what it knows how to do with this Osmo Action 4. No upheaval with the range, we are simply moving up the generation to bring better characteristics to a product that works.
Price and availability
Always difficult to navigate DJI prices, as there are so many packs. It should be noted that the Action 4 is available as standard at 429 euros. But this type of camera only offers its full potential when combined with its accessories.
The “Osmo Action 4 Combo adventure” pack sold for 529 euros is one of the best offers available since it will “offer” you an extension bar, two additional batteries and a storage box for the batteries (which will also serve as a charger ). However, this will not cover all needs.
