Freight revolution: swarm of FORMIC robots on the way

The modules of the FORMIC robotic system are perfectly synchronized and can lift loads up to 37.5 tons.

The latest system for transporting heavy loads can be an alternative to traditional forklifts. When the latter become inefficient in confined spaces or unable to lift large loads, the FORMIC Modular Robotic System comes to the rescue.

This innovative technology being developed German start-up FORMIC Transportsysteme, which works closely with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Each robot module is equipped with six wheels, cameras, a radio chip for communication and a mechanism for lifting loads weighing up to 2.5 tons.

The most amazing thing about this system is that up to 15 of these modules can work in synchrony, lifting a total load of up to 37.5 tons, provided the load has sufficient vertical space underneath.

The “swarm” of robots is controlled in real time using a special joystick. Thanks to built-in cameras and radio communications, robots can track their positions and autonomously coordinate movement. The user can only manage them as a single system, and not separate modules.

The official commercial launch of the FORMIC system is expected to take place this year.
