For the military aspect of the discussion, the Chief of Defense, Admiral Michel Hofman, as well as Vice-Admiral Wim Robberecht, who heads the military intelligence service (SGRS), were invited. Mr De Croo has consulted in recent hours with other EU heads of government, such as Prime Ministers Magdalena Andersson (Sweden) and Sanna Marin (Finland), whose countries were targeted by Russian threats on Friday if they were to decide to join NATO.
The head of the Belgian government also spoke with the President of the Council Charles Michel. He is due to meet again this Monday with the Romanian President, Klaus Iohannis. Belgium is preparing to send 300 soldiers to this country, as part of NATO’s rapid reaction force which is to consolidate the eastern flank of the Atlantic Alliance.
