A2 open again after a pile-up with over 20 vehicles – eyewitnesses report

At the Knutwilerhöhe there was an accident involving more than 20 vehicles on Friday morning. At least 23 people were injured. The southbound freeway was completely closed for several hours.

A rescue helicopter was also deployed.

On Friday morning there was a mass collision on the A2 motorway in Knutwil shortly after 8.30 a.m. More than 20 vehicles were involved. According to the Lucerne police, eight people had to be taken from the scene of the accident to the surrounding hospitals by several ambulance vehicles and a rescue helicopter. All other people were driven by transport vehicles to a collection point where they were cared for. A total of 15 people later sought medical treatment. The police currently have no information on the degree of injury to the individual persons.

The course of the accident is not yet known to the Lucerne police and is the subject of the ongoing investigation. However, as an eyewitness said to “Blick”., the accident happened on a hill. The sun was extremely blinding there and you could hardly see anything. “Maybe someone braked and there was a collision,” he is quoted as saying. The property damage caused by the accident cannot be quantified at this time.

The A2 motorway was closed for several hours in the southbound direction. Northbound traffic was partly single-lane and temporarily closed several times. The accident caused massive traffic disruptions in the entire region.
