Abaxx Exchange claims Energy Risk Asia Newcomer award

Abaxx Exchange has claimed Energy Risk Asia’s 2026 Newcomer of the year award, anchoring its market footprint with 18 listed futures benchmarks across energy, environmental, battery materials, and precious metals since its operational debut in June 2024.

The Bottom Line

  • Trading volume on Abaxx Exchange surpassed 1.5 million contracts in Q3 2026, driven by rising demand for transition commodities.
  • The exchange lists the only physically deliverable global liquefied natural gas (LNG) futures alongside US dollar-denominated nickel sulphate and lithium carbonate contracts outside China.
  • Regulatory approvals span the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, and the European Union’s Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators.

Scaling Liquidity Across Energy Transition Markets

Global commodities markets are grappling with structural shifts driven by electrification and industrial decarbonisation. In Asian power generation, the substitution of coal by gas has accelerated demand for liquefied natural gas. According to Wood Mackenzie, LNG demand in Asia is forecast to almost double by 2050.

At the same time, regional intake of battery raw materials like lithium carbonate and nickel sulphate continues to expand for electric vehicle manufacturing and battery energy storage systems. Geopolitical friction, logistical bottlenecks, and macroeconomic volatility have magnified pricing risks for industrial participants. Traditional hedging instruments, however, have struggled to mirror the precise mechanics of physical supply chains.

Abaxx also provides wind and solar futures that convert weather variability into standardised, tradable generation-volume risk.

“As market dynamics evolve, futures specifications must be engineered alongside industry participants to reflect emerging commercial realities,” Raia adds. The exchange built its contracts through direct collaboration with physical producers, international trading houses, end-users, and financial institutions.

Institutional Architecture and Regulatory Frameworks

The platform was established by an executive team drawn from Goldman Sachs, Nymex, CME, and the Singapore Exchange. Collectively, this leadership group has launched 10 exchanges and clearing platforms.

Transaction utility moved beyond exchange-traded execution in March 2025 when two Asia-based counterparties finalized the first over-the-counter LNG cargo trade indexed to Abaxx futures prices. A secondary milestone followed in May 2025 with the first delivery for a Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for the International Aviation Phase One futures contract.

Contract velocity has accelerated markedly.
