Brigadier General Abdullah Wakim, a writer and poet whose literary talent has emerged since his school days, and he was encouraged by his teacher for his assignments and distinguished recitation. During his service in the ranks of the Lebanese army, he began writing poems for the army and the country, and he lamented his colleagues and loved ones. He also singled out artists for lyrics, including Wadih Al Safi, Samira Tawfiq, and Salwa Al Qatrib. He recently published a new book, “I Have Two Lovers,” which focuses on thoughts and love. He is the son of the earth and rooted in it, stresses its importance, is humble, and a believer who repeats words of thanks to his Creator, who granted him the grace of the word.
The “Art” website met the poet and writer Abdullah Wakim, and we had this dialogue with him.
Tell us about the reason that prompted you to publish the book Thoughts in light of the harsh conditions that Lebanon is going through?
I can’t change the course of events, but life goes on. She has published five books, and “I Have Two Lovers” is the only book that focuses on love, and its aim is to create a breach that carries joy in a time of many crises. And I mentioned in the introduction to the book: “O friends, in a time of indifference, accumulated crises, and intellectual retreat, let us bury our misery, grudges, and concerns aside, go out to light and freedom, breathe the fragrance of the moon, and drink together a toast to love.” I thank the Lord for the blessing of the word he has given me.
You said in a previous interview with “Al-Fan” website that you will publish the book “Caravans of Holiness”, is the idea still open?
Yes, I am happy to be able to publish it, and I have dedicated poems about Saint Rafqa, Pope Saint John Paul II, the Child Jesus, Saint Teresa, Saint Nematallah Hardini, and Blessed Estephan Nehme, all of which are poems that are neither sung nor sung, along with poems about the Lebanese army It was sung by artists Elie Choueiri, Wadih El Safi, Ghassan Saliba, Samira Tawfik, Tony Kiwan, Nihad Tarabay, Simon Obaid and others. The grace of writing about the army and the saints is the pinnacle of giving, and I bow before the greatness of the Lord, because He gives us the word in order to beautify and improve things.
When did your talent for writing and poetry emerge?
At the end of the primary school period, the Arabic language teacher encouraged me through his remarks on the composition assignments, and during my memorization in class, which encouraged me to pay attention to my talent and develop my personality. During my time in the army, I gradually started writing. When I retired, I decided to collect what I wrote of lamentations for army officers, soldiers, and departed loved ones, and love poems and thoughts about the homeland, nature, and social issues, for example my book “Hurry up and vote… My people love their executioners,” which was published in 2013, and its content is fully applicable. on the reality we live in at the present time.
It is clear that your talent for poetry and writing was very advanced, especially since you were an officer during a period that witnessed wars.
True, so I insist that it is a gift from God, and the officer is a human being with his feelings, but the only difference is the ability to express, which is a blessing that not everyone possesses. The creativity of the word is given by the Creator, and I may express in two words a certain idea, which will gain the admiration of the listeners. I presented to the artist Melhem Zein “What’s wrong with you, little girl?” and to the artist Salwa Al-Qatarib, “How sweet is the dust on your clothes.” Someone suggested that the army command allocate an office for me, so that I can only write, and this is a medal that I am proud of. The books that I publish I sell only for one reason, which is to cover the cost of printing, and if circumstances allow me, I do not hesitate to offer them to anyone who wishes.
Is it possible to see a different kind of release of Brigadier General Abdullah Wakim?
The matter depends on the inspiration, and it may be about politics in its beautiful aspect, because one of the poet’s duties is to alert the dangers to the homeland, especially since poets had a remarkable role during the revolutions in the world, for example the French Revolution and others, and poets at that time contributed to launching lofty principles, And they called to turn to good deeds.
The title of the book “I Have Two Lovers” is bold and distinct. It is customary for a man to confess to one lover. What is your comment?
It is true that the title is strange, and I will tell you the reason, and who is the second beloved: “My mother wrote to me saying yesterday a girl visited me and complained. I loved her, and I did not stay as if I were, do not hear my love, I have abandoned the nights, I hate beauty, I am tired of life without jihad, I came with fire and cannon, I came to fight, and in my hands bombs, the sky fused, my trench bed, your bright face, O our blue love, our Lebanon needs boys You take risks, the lamp will not be extinguished, without us there is a fence, so let the throats resonate. Do not cry, my love, tomorrow I will return to you with a gift of a brown face, with delicious kisses, you may be jealous of her, you wretched one.
How can the intellectual collapse that we are witnessing be corrected?
I say give me a person before you give me a homeland, there are many mistakes that have been committed, the human being is weak, and must be provided with morals and values. The homeland remains, and the person must master the behavior. I am sorry for canceling the science service for young men and women, because it is a means of training them on the idea of partnership in the homeland, and the importance of running a home for young women is more important than all sciences. Therefore, joining the young man, after completing his studies, undergoing military training and indoctrinating him with good habits, contributes to building a homeland, otherwise the builders will tire in vain. And I stress the principle of accountability: “But the morals of nations are as long as they remain. If their morals are gone, they are gone.” During a media meeting, I suggested abolishing the constitution, and teaching Wadih al-Safi songs that deal with the homeland, the land, the son, and the human relationship with the land, and it is necessary to recall the disadvantages of man’s distance from the land. I would like to point out that the cell phone has advantages and disadvantages, so the focus is on a small device in the hands.
