Aboul Gheit visits Beirut to discuss issues of war, the displacement of Lebanese, and the presidential vacancy

Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, said that Aboul Gheit’s visit to Beirut tomorrow aims to “consult with the Lebanese leadership on ways to deal with the ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon, which requires minimum Lebanese understandings.”

Zaki added that Aboul Gheit also seeks to stimulate a solution to the presidential vacancy issue, as it is “a matter that has become an important priority” to complete the constitutional leadership in the country, enabling it to face the major challenges it is going through.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League is also trying, through his visit to Beirut, to show solidarity with the Lebanese position regarding the humanitarian and relief situation to support those displaced as a result of the aggression, especially in light of the upcoming Paris meeting on the 24th of this month, in which the Arab League was invited to participate.

Aboul Gheit stressed, on Saturday, that the Government of Lebanon is the only one entrusted with negotiating on behalf of the country in order to reach an immediate ceasefire and complete and undiminished implementation of Resolution 1701.

Aboul Gheit stressed that the Arab League’s position is clear in this regard and that all of its decisions emphasize Lebanon’s full sovereignty in making its fateful decisions.

He announced his full support for the position expressed by Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, which was to reject the Iranian statement about Tehran’s readiness to negotiate with France to implement Resolution 1701.

Aboul Gheit said, “There is no place for imposing guardianship by this or that party, or exerting pressure, or violating Lebanese sovereignty, and we fully stand with Lebanon in this matter, and talk about supporting Lebanese sovereignty should not be just empty words, but rather it should be supported by positions.” Especially true in this difficult circumstance, and the suffering of the Lebanese is not just a negotiating card in the hands of any party.”
