CARACAS – The National Academy of Medicine (ANM) asked the government to take measures to prevent the spread of monkeypox in the country. The request is reiterated regarding the global outbreak alert by the World Health Organization (WHO), since it is urgent that the country implement measures and take action and also declare a health alarm.
He recommended respecting the management of information about the disease and developing surveillance and monitoring programs and reinforcing the diagnostic issue in order to control the disease. So far, only one case has been confirmed in Venezuela, however, public health objectives must be met to avoid uncontrolled outbreaks.
According to the WHO, the disease already registers 16,000 cases in 75 countries and a large part of them in Europe. It is worth remembering that monkeypox is endemic and less dangerous than traditional smallpox. It manifests with high fever and skin rashes, especially on the face.

Manuel Figuera, president of the Venezuelan Society of Infectious Diseases (SVInfectology), pointed out that the monkeypox registered in Europe and the United States is transmitted through sexual contact. Therefore, he pointed out that the population must be educated to control the infection. He recommended vaccination and being on the lookout for any herpes-like lesions, as well as isolating for 21 days to avoid spreading the disease.
The doctor pointed out that the incubation period for the disease is 9 days, when symptoms begin to appear, such as swollen glands in the neck and between the legs, and after 5 days there is a bubble on the skin.
