Movie and television adaptations of video games are growing in popularity and more than a few major game adaptations have been greenlit in recent times Super Mario Bros. about Gears of War and Death Stranding up to The Last of Us, God of War and many others. The chances of commercial and critical success for all of these titles seem to be higher than ever. Does that mean more companies will try to expand their audience with similar projects?
Apparently seems Dead Space also belong to these projects. The legendary director and horror connoisseur John Carpenter was recently in an interview with Variety when asked about his longstanding interest in a Dead Space movie, and while answering that question he may have slipped that a movie is actually in the works – although it doesn’t appear that Carpenter is affiliated with the project.
“I can’t believe how that spread,” Carpenter said when asked about his potential involvement in a Dead Space movie. “I’m a huge video game fan. I was looking at the new digital cameras, the RED, and happened to mention that I’d love to do a Dead Space movie. Word got around and everyone was like, ‘Oh, when are you going to do it?’ I won’t do it. I think they’ve already hired another director. And they didn’t ask me if I wanted to do it. So as long as nobody asks me, I wouldn’t do it.”
Regardless of Carpenter’s involvement in a Dead Space movie, however, the director confirms that he’s excited for the upcoming remake and will definitely star in it.
“There’s a new version of the Dead Space video game coming out in January and I’m in,” he said.
The remake is of course the first step that EA undertakes to revive the franchise after a long hiatus. Although it is not yet known what the company has planned beyond that. Whether those plans will include a film adaptation remains to be seen, but there will be no shortage of fans of the series excited about the prospect. Of course, that wouldn’t be the first film in the franchise. Two animated films have already been released for the game.
That Dead Space Remake, meanwhile, is about to launch and will be available on January 27th for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
