Another great victory for Microsoft in its business to integrate Activision Blizzard King studios into its fold! We learn that the Chinese authorities have validated the operation, all without additional conditions.
Redemption without conditions!
The announcement was made in the most discreet way, without too much fuss. However, the antitrust authority of a new state recently validated the acquisition of Activision Blizard King by Microsoft: it is the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), representing the commercial interests of China.
In a very short press release, shared on the Twitter account of journalist Tom Warren, Microsoft said it took note of the decision of the Chinese authorities, when it was still only a probability at the start of the evening. It must be said that after three phases of study of the file, the Redmond firm will not have had to fight more since the SAMR approves the takeover operation, without conditions!
China’s unconditional clearance for our acquisition of Activision Blizzard follows clearance decisions from jurisdictions such as the European Union and Japan, bringing the total to 37 countries, representing more than two billion people. This acquisition, combined with our recent commitments to the European Commission, will enable consumers around the world to play more games on more devices.
China therefore becomes the 37th state to recognize the takeover of Activision by Microsoft and represents one of the four so-called “major” markets for the video game industry, along with the United States and the United Kingdom. After the recent validation pronounced by the European Union, this is therefore a major step forward for Microsoft. Among the major decisions, that of the FTC is now highly anticipated, since it is the largest market for Xbox.
It should be recalled that at present, the commercial courts of the following States have for the moment validated the takeover in full or under conditions: Serbia and Saudi Arabia (August 2022), Brazil (October 2022), Chile ( December 2022), Japan (March 2023), South Africa and Ukraine (April 2023), the European Union and China (May 2023). Two jurisdictions have so far refused the takeover: the United States of America (December 2022) and the United Kingdom (April 2022). Entities from South Korea, New Zealand and Australia have yet to decide.
