Adapting to the Millennials: The Impact of Generation Y on the Food Industry

Generation Y, also known as millennials, now outnumber baby boomers in the country, and their influence is being felt on the food industry.

The millennial generation brings together people born between the beginning of the 1980s and the end of the 1990s, with the oldest now being 43 years old.

From the outset, the agri-food industry specialist at Dalhousie University Sylvain Charlebois points out a major difference that distinguishes this generation from the previous one, namely the consumption of a smaller quantity of meals.

“They will tend to have one or two meals, compared to boomers, who always rely on the three-meal model; the youngest will have snacks much more often,” he explains, adding that the food offering must adapt to this new clientele.

A need is therefore felt in grocery stores for snacks and ready-to-eat meals. Also to the extent that this generation has been greatly amplified by immigration, diversification of products is required in the aisles in order to ensure not losing ethnic customers.

Mr. Charlebois also points out that generation Y has forced grocers to adapt to their market in new ways.

“As for boomers, and even Gen , that’s not what we’re looking for, offer us something else,” explains the expert.

For example, grocery stores have started selling more natural products to cater to millennials.
