Addressing Prison Overcrowding: Mathieu Michel’s Plans for Future Investments and Improvements

2023-09-26 15:26:00

Mathieu Michel assures that he understands the discontent of the prison guards and, faced with criticism of the dilapidation of the establishments, recognizes that there is still work to be done. “There is a shortage of 1,200 places,” he explains. “Our objective is to implement projects that will achieve sufficient coverage by 2030 to put an end to prison overcrowding.”

There are three main types of investments, he lists. Firstly those which make it possible to build new prisons. In Leopoldsburg and Vresse-sur-Semois, 624 places will be created. Then there is the compliance and renovation of existing prisons, for which 80 million have been released over the last three years. Finally, there is maintenance, which does not depend on the Buildings Authority, but on the FPS Justice which uses the premises.
