Africa affected, Senegal on “alert”

Already 7 African countries have reported a total of almost 1400 cases of monkey poxincluding 1392 suspected and 44 confirmed cases.

Even though the number of cases reported in 2022 is slightly less than half of the cases recorded in 2021. These are Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Nigeria, Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone.

In Senegal, the authorities have made arrangements, said Mamadou Ndiaye, director of prevention, taken up by L’OBS.

“We brought the information to all the health structures in the country through an information note and circulars to all the regional and district chief medical officers,” he said in remarks taken up by The OBS.

He adds: “They were informed through a technical sheet retracing everything that may look like this disease and that will have to be reported. »

According to him, “Senegal is not immune to monkeypox, however the detection mechanisms are in place. »

Monkeypox was first detected in humans in 1970 in the African region and since then most cases have been reported in rural areas and tropical forests.

It is a viral disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans, but also from one person to another, through close contact with an infected person and/or objects, in particular clothing and sheets, as well as than respiratory droplets.
