Al-Burhan, who maintains control of the nation’s military apparatus, issued the appointment to designate al-Atta as the primary officer responsible for the army’s operational command.
The appointment places al-Atta at the head of the military’s staff during a period of sustained internal conflict. As chief of staff, al-Atta will oversee the coordination of the armed forces under the direction of the sovereignty council led by al-Burhan.
