The world number 18. Beatriz Haddad Maia has to cancel her start at the WTA 1000 tournament in Guadalajara at short notice due to an injury. The Brazilian woman sustained serious hand injuries in a shower accident in her hotel room.
She described the unfortunate incident on her Instagram account with a photo of her injured hand: “When I wanted to get out of the shower, the door just slammed open.” The glass pane shattered into many splinters, which caused several deep cuts to the French Open semi-finalist. The 27-year-old had to be treated in hospital as a result.
“After the horror, I’m fine again, it could have been worse. But it will take a few days for the wound to heal,” said Haddad Maia.
