After Covid-19: Every third person suffers from complications

32 out of 100 adults over the age of 65 developed at least one new illness that required medical treatment in the months following a Covid 19 infection. That was 11 more than among people without Covid-19, scientists write in The BMJ.

About a third of people over the age of 65 suffering from Covid-19 needed to see a doctor once more following the acute infection because of another illness. This emerges from the insured data of more than 130,000 people. Among the newly emerged diseases were found above all

  • Respiratory failure (+7.6 percent)
  • Fatigue (+ 5.7 percent)
  • Hypertension (+ 4.4 percent)
  • mental illnesses (+ 2.5 percent)

People who had been hospitalized for COVID-19 were at significantly higher risk for most of these conditions.

The researchers had recorded newly occurring diseases from 21 days following a Covid 19 diagnosis and calculated the additional risk for them over several months. They point out that the additional diseases might place a significant burden on health systems with more than 357 million people infected with Covid-19 worldwide.
