32 out of 100 adults over the age of 65 developed at least one new illness that required medical treatment in the months after a Covid 19 infection. That was 11 more than among people without Covid-19, scientists write in The BMJ.
About a third of people over the age of 65 suffering from Covid-19 needed to see a doctor again after the acute infection because of another illness. This emerges from the insured data of more than 130,000 people. Among the newly emerged diseases were found above all
- Respiratory failure (+7.6 percent)
- Fatigue (+ 5.7 percent)
- Hypertension (+ 4.4 percent)
- mental illnesses (+ 2.5 percent)
People who had been hospitalized for COVID-19 were at significantly higher risk for most of these conditions.
The researchers had recorded newly occurring diseases from 21 days after a Covid 19 diagnosis and calculated the additional risk for them over several months. They point out that the additional diseases could place a significant burden on health systems with more than 357 million people infected with Covid-19 worldwide.
