Syrian actress Omayya Malas responded to the attack launched by Syrian actor Yasser Al-Azma on the series “Bab Al-Hara”, where he accused the makers of falsifying the history of the Levant and degrading the status of women.
In an interview with “Sky News Arabia”, Umayyah Malas, who participated in the series as “Boran”, stressed her respect for Yasser Al-Azma’s opinion, pointing out that the series was not a documentary but rather a dramatic story, as she said: “He is a very great professor and our professor, and he made… An important imprint on Syrian drama. He is a great school, and I respect and understand his opinion, whatever it is.”
She continued: “But I want to say that the Bab Al-Hara series is not a documentary work like other Syrian dramas that documented a specific time period, such as Hammam Al-Qishani, which talked about historical eras that existed in Syria with precise dates and names of well-known personalities. Rather, it is an occurrence.”
As for the idea of it diminishing the status of women, Umayyah Malas explained that there is a submissive woman and a strong woman in all societies and times, adding: “Bab al-Hara has a diversity of women, and there are capable women, and when a woman respects her husband and agrees with his opinion sometimes when he is right within This particular environment is not submission and obedience, but rather imposes its respect on the man to some extent.”
