A Artificial intelligence was the protagonist of yet another unusual situation. In this sense, researchers from the universities of Nottingham, Stanford and Bradford trained a language model to analyze a painting by Raphael, the famous Renaissance painter.

In this case, the work that underwent analysis was Madonna of the Rose (translated as “Madonna of the Rose”), which is displayed in the Prado Museum Madrid, in Spain. As a result, technology ended up reinforcing theories that the painting does not belong to the author, or at least, completely to him.

According to Professor Hassan Ugail, who is also director of the Center for Visual Computing and Intelligent Systems at the University of Bradford, the system provides a binary classification to inform whether the work is legitimate or not. According to Hassan, the technology is capable of recognizing snakes with 98% accuracy.

In the test of the work in question, he states that:

When we tested della Rosa as a whole, the results were inconclusive. So we tested the individual parts and while the rest of the image was confirmed as Raphael, Joseph’s face appeared as probably not Raphael.

Howell Edwards is professor emeritus of molecular spectroscopy at the University of Bradford, as well as co-coordinator of the study, and explained the theory, which comes from research carried out on the work since 1800. Some experts believe that people close to Raphael made parts of the painting. Furthermore, he comments:

The attribution to Raphael’s workshop was gradually accepted later and attributed particularly to his student Giulio Romano and possibly also to Gianfrancesco Penni. In Spain the original attribution was never questioned.

Some connoisseurs consider the quality of the composition and painting of the Madonna, Child and Saint John to be far superior to that of Saint Joseph, which they consider to have been added in the workshop as an afterthought.

The AI program’s analysis of our work demonstrated conclusively that while the three figures of Our Lady, Christ Child, and Saint John the Baptist are unmistakably painted by Raphael, that of Saint Joseph is not and was painted by someone else — possibly by Romano, as believed by zur Capellen and others
