AI PC Hardware Standards: 16GB RAM and NPU Requirement

2024-01-20 07:19:49

Market research firm TrendForce recently issued a report stating that Microsoft is planning to formulate new hardware specification standards for PCs equipped with artificial intelligence. These computers must be equipped with at least 16GB of RAM. Related adjustments may be launched in conjunction with the Windows 11 23H2 version with native artificial intelligence functions. The main reason for this change is that artificial intelligence tools such as generative Copilot require specific hardware to achieve device acceleration.

AI PC requires at least 16GB RAM

In addition to being equipped with at least 16GB of RAM mentioned above, the computer also needs to have an NPU neural processing unit that specializes in artificial intelligence to coordinate the local and cloud computing required for the Copilot function. Some foreign media believe that starting from 2024, 16GB RAM should become the standard configuration of all general consumer Windows desktop computers and laptops. As for commercial computers, they may need to be equipped with 32GB or 64GB RAM to meet the standard. This requirement will also extend to non-AI computers, as manufacturers adjust and change the standard configuration of factory products in response to customer expectations.

Business computer or starting from 32GB

Microsoft has not yet responded to TrendForce’s report and media reports. However, as Microsoft announced earlier that it will change the 30-year-old PC keyboard layout to add Copilot keys designed for artificial intelligence, and announced the launch of a paid enhanced version for Copilot, There are indications that Microsoft will require corresponding specifications changes for computers equipped with artificial intelligence.
