Millions of video game enthusiasts, on consoles or PCs, are increasingly stepping out of the solitude of their screen, into an extremely lively, competitive and spectacular world that has come to resemble any world-class sports competition: an economy in where millions of dollars in prize money are at stake and where fans come to watch their favorites as in the stadium, when they themselves are not playing.

More than in any other regular “physical” sport, in the world of “esports” (electronic sports) an overwhelming reality hits you: on the machines, on the stages or in the virtual battles, there are almost no female players.

If this fall you entered the Palace of the Parliament, at Bucharest Gaming Week, the big esports event that took place in October in Bucharest, you couldn’t quite tell whether you had reached an indoor stadium or stepped into the colorful virtual reality of a video game.

People in the audience laughed and squealed at every twist or show of technical mastery by the players battling it out in various League of Legends, DOTA 2 or Counter-Strike competitions.
