Air Corsica vs. Volotea: The Future of Flights to Corsica in 2024-2027

The allocation of the next DSP, for the period 2024-2027, will be played out in the coming months. And Air Corsica faces the candidacy of Volotea, which is seeking some of the three lines concerned, to Paris, Marseille and Nice.

This is an unusual situation to say the least. And which, if it continues, could quickly prove to be problematic. Whether on the Air Corsica website, by telephone or through travel agencies, it is impossible to book a flight on the regional airline, regardless of the destination, from next January 1.

On the Monday of the start of the school year, in January, I don’t have much choice, I have to be in amphitheater…

Victor is a student in Paris. And usually, at the end of the summer, he already books his flights for his return to Corsica, during the Christmas holidays. This year, he will have to wait. “I can take my flight on December 22, to return to Bastia. But it’s impossible to take my flight to go back to Paris. Every year I do it so early to be sure to have a ticket on the date I want. , because very quickly, in general, the planes are full… On the Monday of the start of the school year, I don’t have much choice, I have to be in amphitheater…”

Students and the diaspora are concerned, but not only. In travel agencies, given the situation, it is difficult to work, as soon as it comes to stays taking place after January 1, 2024.

Vanessa Leca, director of an Ajaccian agency, must regularly put files on hold: “I am in the process of taking care of the file of a client, who is leaving for Miami from January 15 to 22. The problem is that I can already block the Paris – Miami flights, but not the Ajaccio-Paris tickets. For us, that complicates things, because we make a list of people to call back. We reserve their outward journeys, we monitor, and as soon as it is open we will block returns”.

This quack is the consequence of the arrival, as unexpected as it is energetic, of Volotea in the public service delegation equation in the context of air service to Corsica.

Since 1998, Air Corsica, in tandem with Air France, was the only candidate. But for the next DSP, from 2024 to 2027, the Transport Office must study two files. That of the regional company, and that of the Spanish low cost company Volotea.

A competition which casts doubt on the outcome of the call for tenders, and therefore on the name of the company or companies which will provide flights to Paris, Marseille and Nice from 1 January. Difficult under these conditions to ensure the sale of tickets over this period.

On the side of Air Corsica, we assure that “The subject is being processed, and discussions with the Corsica Transport Office are continuing in order to reach a solution in early September to resolve this situation”.

A delay that is intended to be reassuring for users, since the allocation of lots to the various companies will not be voted on at the Assembly of Corsica until next November.
