Air pollution, the new public enemy number 1 of health? (podcast)

2023-06-02 13:10:04

This month, it’s about the air we breathe, and the least we can say is that the findings are not brilliant. Fine particles, pesticides, heavy metals, and other chemicals…. Almost the entire population of the world is exposed to a high level of pollution, which greatly exceeds the thresholds set in 2021 by the World Health Organization. According to the WHO, approximately 7 million premature deaths are due each year to effects of air pollution. In cities in particular, pollution reduces the life expectancy of city dwellers by more than 2 years.

The simple act of breathing has therefore become toxic. So, has air pollution become the new number one public enemy of our health? Where are we most exposed? What are we really risking? And above all, what can we do in the face of these depressing figures?

I am Aline Perraudin, editorial director ofHealth magazine, and to answer all these questions, I receive the Pr Robert Barouki, doctor, biochemist toxicologist, and specialist in the effects of environmental pollutants on human health. Professor Barouki directs an Inserm research unit at the University of Paris Cité, and is head of department at the Necker Enfants Malades Hospital in Paris. He is also the author of Toxic ? Health and environment from alert to decisionpublished by Buchet Chastel, and Do you really know what’s on your plate? published by Solar.
