Alassane Ouattara announces a series of social measures

Côte d’Ivoire celebrated its national day this Sunday, August 7. Saturday evening, like every year, the president addressed the Ivorians. In addition to the pardon of Laurent Gbagbo, Alassane Ouattara also announced a number of measures in favor of purchasing power in times of global inflation, in particular for civil servants. And this while discussions with the unions are underway.

Saturday evening, in front of their small screen, the Ivorian officials had reason to rejoice. Alassane Ouattara made a number of announcements concerning them, stemming from discussions between the government and the unions. From this month of August, all civil servants and agents of the State will benefit from the housing allowance, against a third today. Compensation which will be increased by 20,000 CFA francs per month. Also revaluation of the transport bonus and the family allowance for civil servants who, in addition, will be granted an exceptional bonus at the end of the year.

Retirees have obtained an increase in family allowances for those from the public service. And a 5% increase in pensions for those in the private sector. Total cost of this package of measures: 227 billion CFA francs per year, according to Alassane Ouattara, who also asked the government to start discussions with the private sector on an increase in the minimum wage. Announcements that come as the government and the unions have been discussing for several weeks a 5-year social truce like the one that was concluded between 2017 and 2022.

Alassane Ouattara also recalled the measures taken by the State to counter the inflation that the whole world is facing. 500 billion CFA francs since the beginning of the year to subsidize fuel prices. Another flagship measure decreed at the start of the year, the price cap of around twenty basic necessities. According to the National Institute of Statistics, the annual average inflation would be around 5% in June.
