Albertville proposed to partly accommodate the media – Sport & Society

Host city of the 1992 Winter Games, Albertville (Savoie) should once again experience the thrill of the global event by hosting the Media Center for the Northern Alps as part of the 2030 edition. Nice (Alpes-Maritimes) should occupy the same place for the Southern Alps.

Si the initial version of the tricolor candidacy reporteda possible media presence in the four centers identified between Haute-Savoie, Savoie, Briançonnais and Côte-d’Azurthe feasibility study of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) – the conclusions of which were revealed at the end of November 2023 – had on the other hand sectorized the International Radio-Television Center (CIRTV or IBC) within the National Interest Market (MIN) – Fleurs de Nice, and the Main Press Center (CPP or MPC) in the heart of the future Palais des Congress planned on the port of the city of Alpes-Maritimes.

Today, however, the cartography seems to have evolved further.

During the presentation of the Olympic and Paralympic candidacy of the French Alps to stakeholders from the economic world gathered at the headquarters of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, this Thursday, March 28, 2024, details were provided regarding the system of media implementation.

Concretely, journalists and technicians called upon to cover competitions planned in the Northern Alps would have at their disposal a Media Center located in Albertville.

In all likelihood – and as a link with the Olympic past of the Host City of the 1992 Olympic Games – the emblematic Olympic Hall could be mobilized for the occasion, more than thirty years after having been the setting for the skating events artistic and short-track speed skating.

As specified by the Mayor of the town of the Tarentaise valley, Frédéric Burnier Framboret cited by “The Dauphiné Libéré” :

It is from here that all TV images should be broadcast and TV sets should be filmed.

Albertville is designed as the media base camp, a priori for the events which will take place in the Northern Alps. And it is in the logic of the candidacy to limit travel, because we are equidistant from Annecy and Chambéry, in the heart of the future Olympic sites.

On the Southern Alps side, a similar system should be set up in Nice, with the interior spaces of the future Palais des Congrès as a backdrop, even if the project of this new equipment carried by the Mayor of the city, Christian Estrosi, arouses strong criticism.

It remains to be seen in what exact logistical configuration the distribution of the media will be carried out.

If the installation of two Press Centers seems possible, it remains more difficult to plan the establishment of two CIRTV. On this last point, the Nice track should undoubtedly be confirmed in the months to come.

The upcoming visit of the IOC Future Host Commission and the publication of the latter’s report should in any case contribute to resolving the persistent questions surrounding the French project made official late in the summer of 2023.
