Alexandroupoli: Prosecutor’s investigation into the two babysitters who locked the children in a warehouse – 2024-04-10 04:33:15

A public prosecutor’s investigation was triggered by parents’ complaints that two nursery teachers at a municipal nursery in Alexandroupoli locked the children in a small warehouse, as a teaching measure.

The prosecutor ordered a preliminary investigation to determine whether criminal acts, such as child endangerment, were established as the two babysitters allegedly locked the children in a storage room at the nursery, which they called a “decompression chamber”.

The outrageous things that were happening in the municipal kindergarten of Alexandroupolis were brought to light by the father of a child, and one after another the parents began to connect the disturbing behaviors of their children.
The 40-year-old kindergarten teacher, when asked to explain to the mayor of Alexandroupolis, admitted the torture she subjected the children to, which she described as a way to calm them down, speaking of a “decompression room”. The second nursery nurse is accused of not knowing the actions of the other woman.

The mother of a girl described what her daughter went through: “My daughter took her doll and wanted to put it in the storage room as a punishment. The teacher did not deny it and said that they go into the storage room to calm down. My child would wake up during his nap and say I don’t want to go to school. Some other kids talked about a dark place. The teacher has been removed from her position and we are waiting for new teachers to come.”

The first deposits

After the prosecutor’s intervention, the deputy mayor responsible for the nurseries and the director of the municipal nurseries have been called to testify in the first phase. In addition to the criminal investigation, a disciplinary investigation was ordered by the decision of the mayor of Alexandroupoli, Yiannis Zamboukis, against the two involved childcare workers, who were already placed on holiday.

As the lawyer Menia Polychroni, who represents the children’s parents, told the journalists, from whose complaints the tangle of what was happening at the particular Nursery School began to unravel: “A verbal report was made by the parents of a toddler about confinement in a storage area , closed, without light and ventilation but also locking the children with an outside latch, by the nursery nurses.

This first report triggered reports from almost all parents, initially verbal and then followed by written complaints and reports to both the mayor of Alexandroupoli and the District Attorney of Alexandroupolis. As far as I know, he ordered an urgent preliminary examination to be carried out in order to collect the evidence that might establish criminal offences. This will be decided by the competent Prosecutor. For us there are criminal offences, speaking as a representative of some of the parents. The first is exposure of a minor to danger by a person who was supposed to take care of them and keep them safe in the daycare.

With the removal of the two babysitters, one mother told me that her child’s behavior had already changed. She stopped having the nervousness that she had, the worry that they couldn’t understand where it was coming from and it was the little girl that the teacher or teachers I can’t be sure of yet, in the storage room.”
