Algarve Grand Prix Weekend Weather Update: Rainy Conditions Challenge Drivers

2024-03-21 13:09:57

It has been raining in the Algarve since 11 a.m. local time. Mild but consistent. As soon as the asphalt shines, the first furrows become visible on the faces of the technical teams in the paddock.

Unsteady conditions add a casino factor to an outdoor racing weekend. Exciting, yes, but primarily for the fans on the screens. The pilots themselves in particular don’t enjoy the tire lottery much.

According to the forecast, weather conditions will change little today. When the air temperature is just under 20 degrees, there is a high probability of rain. Things are looking more positive for the official driving days. With constant temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees and overcast skies, the Grand Prix players could have almost ideal conditions. Located just not far from the coast, there remains a particular unpredictability. Meanwhile, there can be no talk of bright sunshine in the holiday paradise.

Given the current conditions, tomorrow’s training day could be particularly exciting. As is well known, the candidates for direct entry into Qualifying 2 are already being recruited in the second session (MotoGP from 3 p.m. local time). If it is still humid tomorrow morning, in a dry unit there would be little scope for experiments despite having an hour. The result would be a shift in the actual balance of power.

Trackhouse Racing youngster Raúl Fernandez was relaxed about a possible ride on rain tires: “To be honest, the MotoGP riders are the lucky ones. The Michelin rain tires provide a lot of information and performance. Driving in the rain is no problem, not even on this route.”

Nothing is fixed. And certainly not the weather. Regardless of whether the pilots of the four racing classes – MotoE is also joining the action in Portugal – start training on dry or wet slopes, a lot of excitement is guaranteed under all conditions.
