Alzira: Black Fly Air Treatment Delay Criticized

Black Fly Treatment delayed: Official Voices Concerns Over Pest Control

Alzira, Spain – An unexpected helicopter malfunction has stalled the aerial treatment program aimed at combating the nuisance of black flies along the Xúquer River. This delay has prompted strong reactions from Enrique Montalvá, the City Services Councillor in Alzira, who questions the effectiveness of the current collaborative approach to pest control.

Official Expresses Frustration Over Delayed black Fly treatment

Montalvá voiced his frustration, stating, “We are concerned about the delay in aerial treatment. We contribute significantly, allocating €40,000,and residents are still complaining. I even wish we had two rounds of applications. It doesn’t seem right.”

The Councillor suggests that Alzira might be better off independently managing its pest control efforts, specifically targeting both black flies and tiger mosquitoes, given the financial investment.

Rethinking Collaborative Pest Control: A Solo Approach for Alzira?

Montalvá further indicated that he has been contemplating Alzira withdrawing from the joint treatment program. “I am considering studying when the contract ends so we can opt-out. We might still use the same company, as we trust them, but organize it differently,” He Said.

He also highlighted a critical oversight: The aerial treatment, despite approvals from the Health Ministry, doesn’t reach the Verde River, which ends up being “a breeding ground for mosquitoes.” Montalvá emphasized, “If we want to control the pests, we need to do it properly.”

pro tip: Regular inspection of your property for standing water can significantly reduce mosquito breeding. Empty containers, clean gutters, and ensure proper drainage.

Consorcio de La Ribera’s Role In Regional Pest Management

The Consorcio de la Ribera, which encompasses both Ribera Alta and Baixa regions, has been managing pest control for several years, tackling both tiger mosquitoes and black flies. Their strategy includes systematic urban applications and shock treatments during peak seasons.

The aerial application against black flies along the Xúquer River involves targeting a dozen hard-to-reach points between Sumacàrcer and Sueca. Technicians have consistently praised the effectiveness of this shock application; however, this year’s campaign has been postponed due to the helicopter issue.

Effectiveness Concerns And The Challenges Of Larva Control

“The problems remain unresolved, and acting against adult insects is more complex than targeting larvae. I believe Alzira can defend itself better alone than with the joint contract,” Montalvá stated, adding that the ministry’s work “falls short”.

The Councillor believes that a more targeted and thorough strategy is needed to combat these persistent pest issues effectively.
