The Ring Nebula is one of the most famous star formations and today a new photo of it captured by the James Webb Space Telescope has revealed unprecedented details of its structure. The photo was captured by an international team of astronomers from the UK, France, Canada, USA, Sweden, Spain, Brazil, Ireland and Belgium.

The Ring Nebula known to astronomers as Messier 57 is made up of several stars that are already at the end of their lives, releasing much of their mass in formation and generating the bright structure that has become a favorite of astronomers around the world.

Jan Cami, core member of the JWST Ring Nebula Imaging Project, says the details revealed today may help to understand more about the death of these stars and the rationale behind their life in the universe:

Scientifically, I’m very interested in learning how a star transforms its gaseous envelope into this mixture of simple and complex molecules and dust grains, and these new observations will help us figure that out.

Mike Barlow, professor emeritus of physics and astronomy at University College London and co-lead scientist of the JWST Ring Nebula Imaging Project, says that looking at the Ring Nebula can help us understand how it was born.

We are witnessing the final chapters of a star’s life, a peek into the Sun’s distant future so to speak, and the JWST observations have opened a new window into understanding these awe-inspiring cosmic events. We can use the Ring Nebula as our laboratory for studying how planetary nebulae form and evolve.

What makes these nebulae so interesting is their diversity of shapes, as they can be delicate bright rings or giant clouds created from physical processes that are still not well understood by scientists.

Els Peeters is one of the astronomers who analyzed the formation’s spectroscopy. According to her, certain molecules present in the nebula defy certain laws of science:

In addition to the morphological treasure trove, there is also a lot of information about the chemical composition of gas and dust in these observations. We even found large carbonaceous molecules in this object, and we still have no clear idea how they got there.

And it is worth remembering that this is not the first major observation made by James Webb, which began operations over a year ago, revealing incredible clicks of Saturn, supermassive black holes, 25 thousand galaxies and incredible photos that have become fantastic wallpapers for cell phone.
