Canada’s Parliament passed a resolution to recognize Palestine as a state

The resolution for the establishment of a Palestinian state has been approved by a majority vote in the Canadian Parliament. The resolution was introduced by the New Democratic Party (NDP) and passed by a vote of 204 to 117, with several amendments after lengthy debate.

Parliament called for a two-state solution of Israel and Palestine for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East. According to the resolution approved by the Canadian Parliament, Canada will work with its international partners towards the establishment of a Palestinian state.

The resolution was introduced by the New Democratic Party (NDP) and passed by a vote of 204 to 117, with several amendments, after lengthy debate.

Almost all members of the ruling Liberal Party, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, along with other parties, the Bloc Quebecois and the Green Party, voted in favor of the amended resolution, while opposition leader Pierre Polivore and members of his Conservative Party voted against the resolution.

NDP chief Jagmeet Singh has declared the approval of the resolution as a victory for his party.

It should be noted that the part of the main draft of this resolution, according to which Canada should immediately recognize Palestine as an independent state, could not be approved.

According to political observers, this is a symbolic resolution and the government is not bound to comply with it. However, this is the first step towards a change in Canada’s foreign policy towards Palestine.

The Muslim community has welcomed the Canadian Parliament’s resolution in favor of Palestine.
