Prime Video’s documentary series Marília Mendonça – Sentimento Louco provides unprecedented access to the late Brazilian singer’s personal archives, featuring world premiere screenings at the Rio Film Festival ahead of its global streaming launch on October 16.
Amazon Expands Tribute to Marília Mendonça
- Prime Video’s docuseries relies on unprecedented access to over 530,000 images, 50,000 videos, and hundreds of written notes.
- The project is part of a broader promotion strategy in Brazil that includes an exhibition at São Paulo’s Museum of Image and Sound and regional premieres.
- Amazon is expanding its tribute to Mendonça beyond non-fiction with a scripted fiction film titled Marília, slated to premiere next year.
Unprecedented Access to Private Archives
Nearly five years after the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of Marília Mendonça and four other individuals on November 5, 2021, Prime Video is offering an intimate look into the life of Brazil’s most popular singer. According to Variety, the project stems from Brazil’s largest investment in preserving a national artist’s memory, secured through a licensing deal between Amazon and the singer’s family.
Joy Ernanny, creative executive at Amazon Studios, detailed the sheer volume of material made available to the production team. The archive includes over 530,000 images, 50,000 videos, and hundreds of handwritten notes, diaries, and phone records belonging to the sertanejo artist.
Directing the Intimate Portrait
To handle the delicate task of sorting through personal notebooks and digital items, Amazon enlisted veteran director of screen biographies Susanna Lira. Lira noted that the production exercised rigorous ethical triage when examining the private materials of an artist who is no longer here to give consent.
“We were even more careful with the material because you don’t have the person here telling you what they want and don’t want to share,” Lira told Variety.
Lira described her appointment as a deeply personal calling, noting Mendonça’s cultural impact as a woman who sang songs she wrote herself that spoke of what women wanted to talk about and wanted to hear about.
Amazon Launches Multi-Platform Promotional Rollout in Brazil
The release of Marília Mendonça – Sentimento Louco anchors an extensive multi-departmental promotional rollout across Brazil. Felipe Tewes, Head of Brazil Local Originals at Amazon, emphasized that the strategy is designed to let fans experience the singer’s legacy across various mediums.
| Project / Initiative | Medium | Key Details |
|---|---|---|
| Marília Mendonça – Sentimento Louco | Docuseries | Global Prime Video premiere on October 16; utilizes personal archives. |
| Exhibition & Music Content | Exhibition / Audio | Hosted at São Paulo’s Museum of Image and Sound (produced by Axon) alongside exclusive Amazon Music content. |
| Marília | Fiction Film | Scripted feature starring Marina Versos, Klara Castanho, and others, scheduled for next year. |
In addition to the docuseries, Amazon is hosting regional premieres in capitals such as Goiânia and Belo Horizonte, alongside a museum exhibition in São Paulo. Furthermore, Amazon is preparing a scripted feature film titled Marília, which stars Marina Versos, Klara Castanho, Sophia Valverde, Marcelo Serrado, and João Guilherme.
Global Ambitions for a National Icon
While the immediate focus remains on satisfying domestic fans who revere Mendonça’s enduring catalog, Amazon executives believe the narrative holds significant international resonance. Tewes noted that the universality of her story and music opens clear pathways for broader global distribution on the streaming platform.
“I find it so interesting how huge Marília is, but also how she still has so much room to grow in terms of her fanbase outside of Brazil,” Tewes stated.
Following its world premiere at the Rio Film Festival—an environment Lira described as a revolutionary way to center an extraordinary woman on a major red carpet—the docuseries arrives for a worldwide audience on Prime Video.
